The “White Diet” Guide: What to Eat and Avoid After Your Teeth Whitening Session
If you have recently had your teeth professionally whitened, you will probably be keen to keep your new smile looking as bright as possible. One of the simplest ways to help protect your results is to pay a little extra attention to what you eat and drink immediately after whitening.
Here at The York Dental Suite, we provide professional teeth whitening with both Boutique Whitening and Enlighten Evolution. Both treatments are designed to give you a brighter, more confident smile, but your aftercare plays an important part in maintaining the result.
I often recommend following what is commonly known as a ‘white diet’ during the first couple of days after whitening. This means choosing lighter-coloured foods and avoiding heavily pigmented or acidic foods and drinks that could contribute to staining or sensitivity.

What is the white diet?
The white diet is not a strict diet or something you need to follow indefinitely. It simply means choosing foods that are pale in colour and relatively gentle on your teeth for the first 48 hours following whitening.
This is particularly useful immediately after treatment, when your teeth may be more susceptible to staining and sensitivity.
As a general rule, I tell patients to think about whether a food or drink is likely to leave a visible stain. If something would leave a mark on a white shirt, it is worth avoiding during this initial period.

Good options include:
- White fish such as cod, haddock and pollock
- Chicken or turkey
- Plain pasta and white rice
- Peeled potatoes and cauliflower
- Bananas and peeled apples
- Plain yoghurt, cottage cheese and milk
- Eggs
- White bread
- Porridge made with milk
- Water and clear herbal teas
These choices make it easier to avoid strongly coloured foods while also keeping meals simple during the first two days.

Foods and Drinks to Avoid after Teeth Whitening
For around 48 hours, I recommend limiting foods and drinks that are highly pigmented, acidic or likely to cause staining.
Coffee and tea are common culprits, particularly if you drink them regularly. Red wine, cola and other dark fizzy drinks can also stain teeth, as can foods containing strong colourings or sauces.
It is best to avoid or minimise:
- Coffee and tea
- Red wine
- Cola and dark fizzy drinks
- Tomato-based sauces
- Curry
- Soy sauce
- Balsamic vinegar
- Berries such as blueberries and blackberries
- Chocolate
- Beetroot
- Citrus juices and other acidic drinks
Smoking can also contribute to tooth staining, so avoiding cigarettes is particularly important if you want to maintain a brighter smile. I would also advise patients to avoid vaping and smoking as part of good oral health generally.
If you do consume something that may stain your teeth, rinsing your mouth with water afterwards can help remove some of the residue. You should also be mindful of very hot or cold foods and drinks if your teeth feel sensitive after whitening.

When can I return to my normal diet?
For most patients, the first 48 hours are the key period when it makes sense to be particularly careful about highly coloured foods and drinks.
After this, you can gradually reintroduce foods into your diet. By around 72 hours, most patients can return to their usual eating habits, while still taking sensible steps to protect their whitening results.
The most important thing is to follow the individual aftercare advice we give you following your treatment, particularly if you experience sensitivity.
How long will teeth whitening results last?
The longevity of your whitening results depends on a number of factors, including your diet and lifestyle.
At The York Dental Suite, we offer both Boutique Whitening and Enlighten Evolution. Boutique Whitening is a professional, home-based treatment using custom-made whitening trays. Most patients maintain their brighter shade for up to six months, although individual results vary.
Enlighten Evolution combines home whitening with a final in-practice whitening session. Most patients can expect their results to last for up to a year, depending on their individual circumstances and lifestyle. Enlighten Evolution also offers a B1 shade guarantee, although the final result will vary between patients.
Whitening toothpastes and serums can also help you maintain your results, and your dental team can advise you on suitable products and top-up treatments.

Looking After Your Newly Whitened Smile
Teeth whitening can be a simple and effective way to brighten your smile, but maintaining the result involves more than the treatment itself. Good brushing and interdental cleaning, regular dental appointments and being mindful of staining foods and drinks can all help you enjoy your results for longer.
At The York Dental Suite, we take a personalised approach to cosmetic dentistry. I believe that achieving an attractive smile should always go hand in hand with protecting your oral health, which is why we assess your teeth and gums before recommending whitening.
