Clear Aligners for Teenagers

Clear aligners are an alternative metal-free treatment to braces for teeth straightening. Over the past decade, they have become increasingly common for treating children and teens.

Set up your teen’s smile for life with the use of clear aligners; a discreet and metal-free alternative to braces that take the stress out of teeth straightening.

Intercepting tooth alignment and bite issues with your teen’s teeth before they reach their adult years can be hugely beneficial. Not only can it reduce the possibility for extractions in the future, but it can also improve their breathing, quality of sleep, and minimise surgical treatment to tackle escalating orthodontic problems when they grow older.

In short, clear aligners for teens nip orthodontic problems in the bud, leaving them to focus on living their best life as they grow into adults.

What are clear aligners for teens, and how do they work?

Clear aligners are an alternative metal-free treatment to braces for teeth straightening. Over the past decade, they have become increasingly common for treating children and teens.

The clear aligners are worn sequentially, with each aligner moving the teeth into a new position approximately every 1-2 weeks. The average treatment time for teens is 12-24 months.

Dr Mafalda and her team are known for their patience, expertise, and skill in delivering life-changing, clear-alignment treatment to teens. She and her team understand the natural desire that growing patients have to fit in with their peers, and discreet clear aligners can give that extra dose of confidence they might need when undergoing orthodontic treatment.

The benefits of treatment

  • Suitable for a variety of orthodontic problems.
  • Addresses issues hindering your teen’s smile development: tooth misalignment, overlapping, and gaps in teeth can all be addressed. In turn, speech impediments or problems often resolve themselves.
  • No limitations on diet: Your teen can eat their normal diet, removing the aligners between meals.
  • No obstruction with brushing/easy maintenance: your teen can take their aligners out to brush normally – there is minimal disruption to their daily oral care routine.
  • Discreet Clear aligners are less conspicuous than braces: they will go unnoticed by peers in school.
  • More comfortable compared to fixed braces: Clear aligners for teens are completely metal-free, which means there are no jagged edges that can break and potentially cause damage to the soft tissues in their mouths. The plastic used to make your teen’s clear aligners fits comfortably over each groove and curve of each individual tooth, and each aligner is easy to get used to within a day or two.
  • Treats simple to complex cases: Clear aligners are effective for simple cases of tooth misalignment and bite problems, through to complex problems affecting your teen’s teeth.
  • BPA-free: The aligner brands we use here at The York Dental Suite are free from potentially harmful BPA (classified as a hazardous chemical).
  • Freedom to play contact sports and instruments: Your teen can remove the aligners to partake in contact sports (where a protective mouthguard is worn) and to play woodwind instruments.

How it works

  • Initial Complimentary consultation: Our dedicated team will take you through the advantages and limitations of treatment with clear aligners and ask you a few questions about your teen’s lifestyle and routine. Our team will be able to answer any questions you have about treatment.
  • Clinical Assessment with the dentist to confirm suitability: Once Dr Mafalda has given the green light on clear aligners and you and your teen are happy to proceed, photos and X-rays can be taken to create a bespoke treatment plan for your child.
  • The Aligners: Your children’s aligners are made and sent back to us at the practice. They are then ready to start their treatment, changing them over every 1-2 weeks (on average, depending on their treatment plan). We will ask you and your teen to come in and see us every 6-12 weeks for progress check-ups.
  • The Results: Once the teeth have reached their final pre-planned position, a retainer is worn to minimize unwanted tooth movement.

Supporting parents and teens alike

We encourage parents to reach out to us if they are having difficulty motivating their teens to wear their aligners or to comply with the other stipulations of treatment. This said, children and teens tend to be the most compliant patients we have!

Removable treatment with clear aligners works successfully only when the aligners are worn for the times recommended by the dentist (this is usually 22 hours).

We are fully behind parents and children and can provide tried and tested advice on how best to oversee your teen’s teeth straightening journey.

What can Clear Aligners fix?

invisalign before after

Crowded teeth

Crowded teeth is a condition where you do not have enough room for your teeth to fit normally. This can cause plaque or tartar and other harmful bacteria to build up as it is harder for you to brush and floss well.

invisalign before after

Gaps between teeth

Gaps between teeth is when there is extra space between two or more of your teeth. This can cause pockets between your teeth and gums and can cause food to get stuck making them tender and sore. This might also lead to gum disease.

Open bite

An Open bite is when your upper and lower teeth don't touch when you close your mouth. An open bite can make it hard for you to chew or difficult to bite even the most common of food like apples.

Underbite

An underbite is when you close your mouth and your lower front teeth are in front of your upper teeth. In many cases, this is actually a problem with your lower jaw being too far forward. An underbite can make it hard to chew properly and speak clearly, and it might cause your teeth to wear down more quickly.

Overbite

An overbite is when your upper front teeth overlap with your lower front teeth. Most people have at least a little overbite. When your overbite is too large, your doctor might tell you you have a deep bite. This can cause problems, from your teeth wearing down to pain in your jaw.

Crossbite

A crossbite is when you close your mouth and yet some of your upper teeth are sitting inside your lower teeth rather than on the outside. A crossbite can make your teeth wear down or chip. It can also make your gums start to recede or make little notches above your gum line. This kind of damage can lead to painful gum problems or even bone loss.

FAQs

1. Do teens do well with Clear Aligner Treatment?

There is a certain level of compliance involved with clear aligner treatment. Therefore, your teen must be prepared to cooperate with the guidance that goes alongside clear aligner treatment. This involves wearing the aligners for 22 hours each day and refraining from eating and drinking with them in (only water can be consumed with the aligners in).

If your teen can’t follow the recommended guidance, they may not see the desire result, and metal braces may be a more suitable course of action.

2. Which Clear Aligner brands do you offer for teens?

We offer Invisalign® Teen, as well as Angel® aligners. Both of these brands are market leaders in the treatment of orthodontic ailments and abnormalities in teens.

3. Are there fewer appointments with Clear Aligners than with traditional metal braces?

As there are no wires for your Teen to content with, there is no risk of damage to the aligners due to metal breakages. This is one of the factors that increases the frequency of appointments with patients of metal braces.

4. What if my Teen loses a Clear Aligner tray?

Since we have all the data we need to create your teen’s custom Clear Aligners, they can easily be re-fabricated. However, if it’s almost time to transfer to a new aligner, Dr. Mafalda may suggest advancing to the next set of aligners early.

5. How are clear aligners cleaned?

Compared to metal braces, clear aligners for teens require less maintenance. They can be cleaned every other day with water and cleaning solution to remove bacteria. Metal braces take longer to clean, and it can be more challenging for your teen to clean between the metal components.

6. Does Clear Aligner Treatment hurt?

Some mild pressure is applied to your teen’s teeth – this is necessary to move the teeth into their eventual healthier position. But, this pressure (and very mild) discomfort is short-lived. Teens adjust to wearing their aligners quickly and become accustomed to switching them in and out, as they move along the treatment timeline.

7. Will the teeth move after Clear Aligner Treatment?

Your teen will need to wear a retainer following the Clear Aligner-wearing period. This is to prevent teeth from moving back out of their new position. Dr Mafalda will provide guidance on how your teen should wear their retainer.
